Jefferson University's Team Black climbed to a 6-0 record last week in the women's college summer basketball league. Even if they lost their last two regular-season games, the summer Lady Rams would tie for first place.

The team's sixth victory came against Team Sky Blue (Holy Family), 67-60, lowering Sky's record to 4-2 and tying them for second place with alumni squad Team Cyber Pink, the defending league champions.

Team Purple (mostly West Chester University with some Chestnut Hill College additions) lost both games last week, slipping to 3-3. Purple's second loss was to Team Kelly Green (which has a couple of former CHC athletes), and Kelly climbed to a 2-4 record alongside Team Lemon Gold. Two teams were 1-5: Team Royal Blue (from multiple schools) and Team Maroon (mostly Arcadia University).

After securing its first victory on July 10, Maroon owned a 1-4 record with Tuesday's 79-50 loss to second-place Sky Blue. Sky rose 4-1 as forward Claire Dougherty turned in her second 20-point performance in a row, but the game high of 22 belonged to Maroon's Hanna Rhodes.

Maroon had company, with two other teams slipping 1-4 in Tuesday night setbacks. In a bout between mixed-draft teams, Kelly Green fell to Lemon Gold, 48-40, while Royal Blue lost 70-49 to Cyber Pink. Pink tied for third place with a 3-2 mark, and Lemon Gold was alone in fifth, at 2-3.

Tuesday's marquee game saw Jefferson's Team Black meet the Purple, both tied for second place. The contest didn't quite live up to its billing as Team Black bolted to a 12-0 lead and Purple didn't get on the board until incoming Chestnut Hill College freshman Sabria Mann hit a free throw with 1:11 left in the opener.

The score was 16-3 at the quarter and 35-17 at the half, but over the first four minutes of the second quarter Purple reduced its deficit by 10 as the score tightened 41-33. Black was ahead by 12 at the three-quarter mark, and reinforced that lead with the first five points of a low-scoring fourth quarter.

Helping power the summer Rams' 63-49 win was double-digit scoring from sophomore Gabby Recinto (12 points), junior Emily Spratt (11), and redshirt freshman Caleigh Sperling (10). Recinto shared the game high with Purple's Alainna Hopta, who did all her scoring from the three-point loop.

Purple suffered another setback on Thursday, succumbing to Kelly Green, 66-58.

Former Chestnut Hill College post-player Emily Chmiel posted a game-high 22 points. Another former Griffin, guard Avery White, added 12. Hopta had 12 to lead the Purple, and the team also got contributions from two incoming CHC freshmen, Alli Kamulda (11 points) and Mann (six).

Team Maroon led Cyber Pink, but a second-quarter charge gave Pink a 34-27 halftime lead in that Thursday evening contest. The defending champs pulled away, winning 85-57 as Taylor Hamm scored 28 and Rylee Derr (an Arcadia assistant coach) added 21. Maroon was led by its two University of Scranton draftees, Kyra Quigley (13 points) and Academy of Notre Dame grad Lizzie Halligan (12).

Thursday’s big game was the showdown between Jefferson Black and Holy Family Sky Blue, rivals during the regular college season.

Team Black went up 4-0 and led for much of the first quarter, but soon Sky edged ahead, 15-13. Black tied it at 19-all, then launched a series of outside shots, missing the mark. Sky Blue led 25-21 at intermission, and again 35-30 in the middle of round three.

Later, Jefferson was back within a bucket at 43-41, but in a 22-second possession at the end of the quarter they couldn’t score. Sky Blue still led at the start of the final frame.

Early on, Jefferson sophomore forward Carolyn Sipprell retired to the bench with her fifth personal foul. Her teammates rallied around, determined to, "Win just one for the Sipper."

The summer Rams took the lead 54-52, with 6:07 remaining, when sophomore guard Kaci Mikulski knocked down a three-pointer. Junior Emily Spratt scored eight more points to solidify a Black lead, which also got a midrange bank shot and free throw from Sperling and a fastbreak bucket from incoming freshman Kylie Mulholland.

In the 67-60 victory, Spratt scored 20 of her game-high 24 points in the second half. Sperling finished with 19 points and Plymouth Whitemarsh grad Jordyn Thomas added six. Upper Dublin High School alum Amy Ngo led Sky Blue with 15.
