John J. Currie, Jr., of Philadelphia, passed away on May 21, 2023 surrounded by his family. John was born on April 14, 1942 to Gertrude (nee Welsh) and John (Jack) Currie, in Mount Airy. John was a proud alumnus of Holy Cross Catholic School and Cardinal Dougherty High School. After graduating, John attended Pennsylvania State University and enrolled in the United States Navy, where he served on the USS Independence. Upon returning home, John graduated with a Bachelor’s in Political Science from LaSalle University. He worked for Dorman Products before becoming an independent salesman. John enjoyed interacting with his colleagues and customers every day.
The Local was one of John's clients. He spearheaded the print edition's delivery efforts for decades. During the COVID pandemic, he was the sole reason why residents of Chestnut Hill and surrounding communities were able receive their Locals each week.
John was predeceased in death by his parents and his younger brother, Robert. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Dorothy (nee Moore); his daughter, Kathleen Lucadamo and her husband, Erick; and his son, John. He was also a loving Grandpa to Dominic V. Lucadamo. John is also survived by his large extended family and his dear friends.
John was a proud member of the American Legion, Arthur V. Savage Post 100 in Wyndmoor; the VFW Post 5205 in Chestnut Hill; and the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Philadelphia. He loved sports, especially baseball, and enjoyed watching his children and grandson play. John was a lifelong learner- he especially loved history but was also a devoted student to learning everything he could about the products he sold. He was very passionate about his work. John was the first person contacted when someone needed help, and he always volunteered his time and talent for the people and causes he loved most. He will be sorely missed by his loved ones.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation on Friday, May 26, 2023 from 9 to 11 am, and his funeral mass immediately following at 11:00AM. Both will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 140 E. Mt. Airy Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19119. Interment will be private.
