Letter: Our criminal justice system needs change

Posted

We appreciate State Rep. Rabb’s profound impact while representing our section of the city. He has gone to great lengths to ensure the immediate and long-term well-being of his constituents and for that we are grateful.

We wanted to take this opportunity to highlight some areas of concern, as well as recognize the positive actions he has taken in office from the point of view of public school students.

In our social science class, we have learned about the detrimental effects of mass incarceration, which are built upon our country’s racist past. It has disproportionately disenfranchised minority populations over minor convictions. We know that Rep. Rabb is working to combat this issue with House Bills 2718 and 2719, which will expand voting rights and resources for those in correctional facilities. Furthermore, House Bill 170 will provide monetary compensation and additional support for those who were wrongfully convicted.

However, we would also like to see change in the criminal justice system. We feel that more funding and support for the many probation officers who are overwhelmed with cases, along with the Police Advisory Committee, would help address the lack of individual support and overall transparency. With House Bill 2643, Rabb has already put efforts into preventing police officers from abusing their sick time. On a similar note, it would be beneficial to see legislation that further holds law enforcement officers accountable for misconduct or brutality.

We realize that this is a very complex topic with no singular solution, but we believe that dedicated representatives like Christopher Rabb can help us reform the criminal justice system, one step at a time.

Another action that he has taken that we are fully supportive of are the steps taken to make our elections as fair as possible. The randomization of candidates' positions on a ballot will remove any bias that could influence someone's vote. Rabb’s dedication to the democratic ideals of our nation is inspiring, and we hope to see many more state representatives following in his footsteps.
