I was astounded when I saw the recent demolition and mass deforestation in progress at the Sugarloaf Campus of Chestnut Hill College bordering on Germantown Pike. Seeing the extent of the deforestation and its potential environmental impact, especially being so close to Wissahickon and Germantown Pike, I am shocked how this could happen in such a way. While the long-timer project may have acceptable stormwater runoff mitigation there will be insufficient. With recent heavy rains and flooding throughout the entire Wissahickon basin, it is imperative that correct storm water management be implemented to prevent extreme erosion.

Being unaware that planning for this project was taking place I can only assume that local residents and property owners were given the opportunity to discuss their concerns. In my experience, projects of this scale involve some compromises and often stipulate significant steps to mitigate the impact on both adjacent property owners and the general environment. I can only hope that Chestnut Hill College and its contractors are fulfilling their responsibilities regarding this project.

Twenty-two years ago, when my husband and I started to build our home next to the park we were required to adhere to the strictest standards, stormwater management and otherwise, and were so glad for it. What I am seeing with Sugarloaf leaves me wondering.
