Magpie, an antique and vintage home decor shop at 8517 Germantown Ave., celebrated its official opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Feb. 12. The store’s owner, Debra Clarke, has also planned a celebratory evening with Tom Scheerer, a renowned interior designer, on Feb. 22 at 5 p.m.
Although the shop first opened in November, Clarke only signed a temporary lease. This ribbon cutting ceremony marked her decision to extend the lease — and become a permanent fixture on the Avenue.

Ann Nevel, retail advocate for the Chestnut Hill Business District, is excited about Magpie’s success.
“Since Magpie quietly opened for business in November of last year, it has been building a fan base among discerning treasure-hunting aficionados,” Nevel said. “Owner and buyer Debra Clarke has an eye for vintage and antique pieces that align with the aesthetic and desires of many of our shoppers.”
Book talk
Scheerer’s appearance at Magpie will highlight his third and newest book, “Tom Scheerer: Still Decorating,” which was published last fall by Vendome Press. Clarke is friends with Scheerer, but she also draws inspiration from his views on interior design.
“One of the things I love about his work is that he designs for comfort, and has a way of making spaces that are perfect for the humans who use them — though they don’t know why,” Clarke said. “Tables are always the right height, the lamps are just where you need them, and everything you see, or touch, has an essential beauty.”
Scheerer’s work has drawn critical acclaim. Called “one of the true American greats” by the New York Times, the interior designer has also been named to Architectural Digest’s AD100 list of top designers and designated a “Titan” on Elle Decor’s A-List.
In “Still Decorating,” readers will learn about 20 of Scheerer’s latest projects located up north (Maine; the Hamptons; Greenwich, Connecticut; and New York City), out west (Dallas; Big Sky, Montana; Aspen, Colorado; and Jackson Hole, Wyoming), and down south (primarily Palm Beach).
The Feb. 22 event will begin at 5 p.m., with a book signing at 5:30 p.m. According to Clarke, there will be no chairs and no formality, but instead just conversation, questions, and the chance to meet Scheerer. Refreshments will be served.
