A man believed to be in his late 30s died at Devil’s Pool in Wissahickon Valley Park Friday evening, according to Philadelphia police. The man jumped into the pool from a large rock before drowning. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Devil’s Pool, a deep hole of water nestled below a rushing waterfall and surrounded by towering rock cliffs, is a popular destination for hikers and outdoorspeople. It is not legal to swim there but people often do.
Ruffian Tittmann, executive director of the Friends of the Wissahickon, warned swimmers away from the pool in a 2020 interview with GreenPhilly.
“I’d say it’s especially dangerous, in addition to diving into water you don’t know, to dive into areas around the dams because that force creates a churn that can be very hard to break out of even for an experienced swimmer,” she said.
