Mount golfers have little trouble adding to their string of AACA titles

Success perpetuates success, and that has once again proven true for the golf team at Mount St. Joseph Academy. The outstanding results produced by the program in the past continue to attract new talent to the school,

and last week strong showings by freshmen helped the Magic win the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies championship for the 21st year in a row.

For many years, the AACA tournament had been held out in Chester County at Honeybrook Golf Club, but now it's been decided that the championships will be rotated around among the home courses of the various league schools. Last Wednesday, the 2023 tourney was held at Gwynedd Mercy Academy's home venue at Blue Bell Country Club.

For the team championships, each school sent out eight golfers to play the par-36 front nine at Blue Bell, and for each squad, the top five individual scores would be added up to arrive at the official team score.

The best round for the Mount, and for the overall field, was turned in by junior Jewel Schaefer, a four-over-par 40. Freshman Kathryn Collins shot a 43 and sophomore Gillian Holt fired a 44. Freshmen Madeline McClean and Emily Catalfano turned in scores of 47 and 48, respectively, to round out the Mount's team score of 222.

This allowed the Magic to claim the 2023 league title by a very comfortable margin, since Villa Maria Academy's second-place total was 262. Gwynedd's team score was 277, then came Merion Mercy Academy with 322 and Villa Joseph Marie, at 330. The sixth league member, Sacred Heart Academy, sent only one player to the tournament.

Last Wednesday's gathering also served as a qualifying event for the PIAA District 1 championships. Since it was an 18-hole qualifier, the players aiming for the District tourney went out late in the afternoon 1and played the Blue Bell front nine a second time. Golf carts rushed the players from the fairways to the greens so that they could complete the second circuit before dark.

Nace produced the best score of this round with a 41, giving her a 93 overall. Schaefer earned the best overall score, an 83 that included a round of 43 the second time out.

The other qualifiers for the Magic were Collins (89), Holt (92), sophomore Michaela Ianieri (95), McLean (96), Catalfano (98), senior Taylor Delli Carpini (100), and sophomore Daria Yohe (105).
