In track and field, Mount St. Joseph Academy won the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies championship meet each year from 2021 to 2024, but last year the Magic were dethroned by Gwynedd Mercy Academy by a score of 170.5 to 161.

The two teams proved to be closely matched once more as the AACA dual meet season got underway on March 25, but this time the Mount prevailed, 79-61. League member Villa Joseph Marie was also present at the meet on Gwynedd’s track, and the Jems were outscored by the Magic, 101-35.

The Mounties placed first in eight of the 16 events (there was no pole vault competition) and garnered 15 second- and third-place finishes. Some teams did not enter certain events in this early spring tune-up.

Mount quartets ran alone in the 4x100 and 4x800 relays. In the former race, senior Kristen Savage, freshman Marin Ledwith, senior Layla Seward and junior JJ Miros posted a time of 53.48 seconds, while in the 4x800 freshmen Hannah Lauria and Maggie Toner, junior Charli Schoen and sophomore Emily Reichert finished in 10 minutes 34.61 seconds.

The Monarchs won the 4x400 relay in 4:12.74, while the Magic finished second and there was no Villa Joe entry.

Mount junior Cecelia Esbensen won both hurdling events, the 100-meter (17.53 seconds) and the 300 (48.11). In the 100, the Magic had senior Sophia Hartzel in second place and sophomore Delaney Mook in third, while freshman Ava Atkinson came in third in the 300.

Esbensen also placed second in the high jump, clearing the same height as the winner from Villa Joe (five feet even) but with an additional attempt. The Mount got a third-place effort here from junior Brooke Donohue.

Senior Morgan Cross captured first place for the Magic in both the long jump (15’ 9.5”) and the triple jump (33’ 4.75”), and senior Kaitlyn Cunningham was third in both events. Another 12th-grader, Jenna Miller, won the javelin (86’ 2”), and junior Lila Gregorio placed second in the discus.

Villa Joe won both the 100- and 200-meter dash, but two MSJ juniors who were basketball teammates fared pretty well. Miros finished second in the 100 and fourth in the 200, while Caroline Dougherty was third in the 200 and fourth in the 100.

Gwynedd did well in the longer footraces. The Monarchs’ Lucy Van Hoof won the 400 meters (1:00.95), Molly O’Neill won the 800 (2:33.60) and Reese Miller prevailed in the 1600 (4:59.54). Mount St. Joe had senior Sarah Hock become the runner-up up in the 800, and junior Annie Seminack was third in the 1600.

No one but the Mount entered the 3200-meter run; Reichert finished in 13:00.38 and Toner crossed the line two seconds later.
