Nearby rivals Springside Chestnut Hill Academy and Mount St. Joseph Academy met for a nonleague field hockey match at SCH last Tuesday. All the scoring was done in the second half, when the visiting Magic tallied twice and the Blue Devils put in a late goal to produce a 2-1 Mount victory.

The significance of the game went beyond the action on the field, as it was a special annual fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The sister of SCH coach Emilee Ehret Mahon, Gretta Ehret, was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer in 2019.

"Dream Crazy" fundraisers were established in her honor, both at the high school level and at the University of Pennsylvania, where she played and coached. The proceeds are donated to METAvivor, a nonprofit organization that raises awareness and also funds research and grants specifically to tackle Stage 4 breast cancer.

Gretta Ehret, a 2005 Penn Charter graduate, is currently the head field hockey coach at Radnor High School.

Tuesday's outcome on the hockey pitch raised Mount St. Joe's overall record to 12-2, while SCH fell to 5-6. The Magic remained in second place in the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies, and Springside was in the fourth spot in the Inter-Ac League.

While SCH generated a fair amount of offensive activity, overall the Mount spent more time on the attack in Tuesday's clash. The Blue Devils pushed upfield at the outset, then the Magic came back down and crossed into the home team's circle. The Mounties earned a corner play, and SCH senior goalie Colleen Conlan made several saves during this stretch.

Late in the first quarter, a hard shot by MSJ sophomore Caitlin Paul went a little wide to the right of the Blue Devils' cage. The second quarter proceeded in a similar vein, also without a goal by either side.

In the third period, Paul kept up the pressure for the Mount offense, keeping Conlan active. With 4:05 elapsed, the Mount scored out of a crowd of players in front of the Blue Devils' cage. Conlan was a few steps out of the goalmouth when Magic senior Jill Marcolina tapped the ball past her and the ball rolled across the line.

Starting the fourth quarter with a 1-0 lead, the Magic scored what proved to be the game-winning goal just 18 seconds in. They attacked at the left post and senior Sienna Noh finished the play.

This time, the Blue Devils responded in kind. Sophomore Amelia Clements brought the ball in along the right endline, and after a few touches inside, freshman Penny Boyle scored with 10:21 remaining in the game.

The Devils' best chance to tie the match came right at the end, when a penalty corner was called just as time ran out. SCH had senior Devyn Conlan get off a shot, but the ball hopped outside of the left post.

UPDATE: Later last week, Springside Chestnut Hill went on the road to claim a 2-1 victory at Hun School, balancing its overall record at 6-6.

Mount St. Joe improved to 13-2 with a 3-1 win over Neshaminy High School, a perennial power in the Suburban One League.
