A man wanted in connection to a string of robberies in Mt. Airy has been arrested, according to Lt. Michael Whaley, of the 14th Police District.
Whaley told a group of 25 residents at the Police Sector Area (PSA) 4 meeting on Oct. 23 at the Water Tower Recreation Center, 200 E. Hartwell Lane, that the suspect, Gary Corbett, 33, of the 7300 block of Devon Street, was apprehended by police following a robbery near SEPTA's Mt. Airy Train Station.
Lt. Dennis Rosenbaum said police noticed a pattern of robberies occurring near the Mt. Airy Train Station and the Allens Lane Train Station and immediately assigned several plainclothes officers to the area.
“All the victims were coming from the train station,” Rosenbaum said.
Rosenbaum said police immediately attempted to “saturate” the area with undercover officers.
According to police reports, the first incident occurred on Oct. 2 at 9:10 p.m. on the 7300 block of Devon St. A 56-year-old woman was pushed to the ground by the suspect, who took her pocketbook containing an undetermined amount of cash, credit cards, ID and a cell phone.
Additional robberies occurred on the following dates: Oct. 9 at 10:20 p.m. on the 7300 block of Cresheim Road; Oct. 12 at 12:50 a.m. on the 7300 block of Cresheim Road; Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. on the 7500 block of Boyer Street, and Oct. 16 at 11 p.m. on the 7400 Block of Boyer Street.
Corbett was charged with five counts of robbery, terroristic threats, theft, receiving stolen property, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.
According to court records, Corbett has pleaded guilty to drug charges and DUI offenses. In addition to his recent arrest, Corbett currently has an open court case involving drug charges. He is currently being held at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 4.
