Northwest Philadelphia area floral and landscape designers were among the winners announced earlier this week at the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show, which runs through Sunday, March 12, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

In landscape design, the Germantown-based landscape architecture firm Apiary Studio took home the prize for exemplifying the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s mission to activate horticulture and gardening as a force for the “greater good” by advancing the health and well-being of people and their environments. Apiary also won a bronze medal for an exhibit that showcased how gardens can be transformed at different times of the day.

Also recognized with a “Greater Good” award, in the floral design category, was Black Girl Florists, a new professional organization of floral designers whose Flower Show participants included florists from Philadelphia. Among them: Aliyah Ali, a Chestnut Hill College graduate who started her firm in a Germantown apartment. Black Girl Florists was also awarded a silver medal. The group’s exhibit featured an array of vibrantly colored florals reflective of the Flower Show theme “The Garden Electric.”

Among the educational exhibit winners, the Temple University Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture in Ambler won several awards, including honors that recognized the school’s “use of a variety of plants in a unique fashion” and its use of messaging that raises public awareness. Temple also won a gold medal in the exhibition, along with W.B. Saul High School of Agricultural Sciences in East Falls, which also received that honor. Saul is the only Philadelphia High School to maintain their own grounds as well as participate in the Flower Show.
