In terms of the team standings in the women's college summer league, the most significant result in the last set of games before July 4 was a 70-63 victory for Team Sky Blue (Holy Family) over previously undefeated Team Purple (West Chester).

This left Jefferson University's Team Black as the league's only undefeated team, with wins last Tuesday and Thursday sending Black into the holiday break with a 5-0 record. With one of the league's teams receiving a bye on each night of competition, some franchises have played six games while most have played five.

Sky Blue, which has yet to have its bye, went into the holiday hiatus with a 5-1 mark, while Purple and Team Red (Chestnut Hill College) were each 4-1. Team Pink, a collegiate alumni team that includes three Chestnut Hill grads, was 2-3, as was Kelly Green, made up of NCAA Division III players from a number of different schools.

With most of its athletes coming from Arcadia University, Team Maroon notched its first win of the season last week for a 1-5 record. The same 1-5 mark belonged to Royal Blue, a Division III combo team with a majority share of Cabrini University athletes. Still winless, now at 0-5, was Team Sun. It's the only squad blending Division II and Division III players, and frequent absences by the players from DII Kutztown University have hampered Sun's chances for success.

In their Tuesday evening victory over formerly unbeaten Team Purple, the summer Tigers of Holy Family never built up an unassailable lead, but they were ahead by a few baskets most of the game. Sky Blue turned out all of its "bigs," and ended up having nine different players score six or more points. In its seven-point setback, Purple was led by guard Leah Johnson, with 12 points, and Plymouth Whitemarsh grad Anna McTamney, who netted more than half of her 11 points on six-for-seven foulshooting.

In their win over Team Sun, the alumni players of Team Pink received 11 points from 2023 Chestnut Hill College grad Lauren Crim, but the big difference-maker was forward Taylor Hamm. It was the first summer league contest she was able to attend, and she recorded a game-high 20 points. Sun's Rachel Saxton was close with 18 points, and Germantown Academy grad Abby Marino scored six points in the losing cause.

Also making her first summer league appearance was Team Red's Angelina Balcer, an incoming freshman at Chestnut Hill. She's a Plymouth Whitemarsh grad and is the daughter of CHC athletic director Jesse Balcer. Even with her participating, Red had a starting group of five players and no more.

Their opponent was Division III Team Royal Blue, a squad that includes eight Cabrini University players who had found out a few days earlier that Cabrini would be closing for good at the end of the 2023-24 academic year. One of the Cabrini athletes, Abington High School alum Miranda Liebtag, scored 13 of her team-high 19 points during the first two quarters to help Royal enjoy a 30-27 halftime lead.

Playing with no subs, Team Red managed its time and energy better in the second half, turning the game around in an 18-6 third quarter. Penn Charter grad Kait Carter scored eight points during the period, and each of her four teammates scored, as well.

CHC junior Bridie McCann would emerge with a game-high 20 points, canning three three-pointers in the fourth quarter to help cement a 61-47 victory. Carter finished with 16 points and Avery White had 12, while Sara Tamoun deposited eight points and Balcer had five.

The only truly lopsided game last Tuesday had Jefferson's Team Black dispatching Team Maroon, 83-52. It took awhile for things to get out-of-hand as the first quarter ended with an 18-11 tally, but Black steadily pulled away as junior Sam Yencha hit 10 field goals for a game-high 20 points. Her classmate Cassie Murphy registered 16 points and senior Haley Meinel scored a dozen.

On Thursday, Team Black actually faced a 6-8 deficit at the end of the first quarter while playing the best of the Division III units, Kelly Green. The Jefferson group rallied and went ahead for good in a 19-10 second period, with Yencha netting seven points and five of her teammates also finding the basket. Black went on to win, 55-43, as Yencha and Emily Spratt each finished with 11 points.

P-W's McTamney rang up a game-high 22 points and made five of her six free throws to lead Team Purple in an 84-55 romp over Royal Blue. Sky Blue took a 67-51 decision over the Pink alumni consortium, with the losing side receiving three three-pointers and a total of 11 points from CHC grad Crim.

With each team vying for its first victory, Arcadia's Team Maroon led Team Sun at the three-quarter mark, 44-41. Maroon was up by four points early in the fourth quarter, but with a little over three minutes remaining Sun edged ahead, 53-52.

The score seesawed to 55-54, but down the stretch two lay-ups by Tyra Roberts moved Maroon ahead for good and sealed a 58-55 victory. Roberts, one of the few Maroonies not from Arcadia, hails from Alvernia College.

After the lay-off during the July 4 week, action will resume in the league on July 11 with league leader Black taking on another DII outfit, Team Purple.
