Penn Charter’s tennis team enjoyed pleasant late-summer weather last week, when the Quakers hosted a nonleague match against the Lancers of Central High School.

Penn Charter’s tennis team enjoyed pleasant late-summer weather last week, when the Quakers hosted a nonleague match against the Lancers of Central High School.

Because of the need to give JV players time on the courts, each varsity bout consisted of a single pro-set, in which the victor is the first player to win eight games. PC wrapped up the singles contests quickly, but Central provided stubborn resistance in a few of the doubles contests.

In the end of the Sept. 14 event, Charter prevailed up and down the team ladder, posting a 7-0 victory. It was a welcome result after the Quakers were roughly handled by a talented young Germantown Friends team four days earlier.

The Central High team, for its part, routinely schedules matches against tough nonleague opponents, which prepares the Lancers for anything they will face within the Philadelphia Public League. After the visit to Penn Charter’s School House Lane courts, Central had a record of 5-2 overall while remaining 3-0 in league competition.

In the match at PC last week, the first singles contest featured two seniors. Here, Olivia Vail, of the Quakers, secured an 8-1 victory over Central’s Alivia Glenn.

The other singles flights also produced 8-1 wins for Penn Charter. Senior Layla Joshi took the measure of Lancers junior Lucy DeVore at second singles, and in the third spot PC’s Avery Morris defeated fellow sophomore Nina Nordbrandt of the visiting team.

At first singles, a pair of seniors representing the Quakers cruised to an 8-0 win. Here, hosts Lulu Jordan and Lila Gonnella defeated senior Vivienne Profy and junior Jaanu Pandejee from Central.

Jordan is one of the team captains for Penn Charter this fall, along with classmates Joshi and Vail. Gonnella is the only PC senior currently committed to playing an intercollegiate sport. A member of the Quakers’ championship lacrosse team (both Inter-Ac League and Pa. Independent Schools), she’ll move on to play for Columbia University.

Charter also achieved an 8-0 victory in the fourth doubles flight, where senior Caroline Tullo and freshman Ava Devine topped Lancers juniors Elise Feng and Amanda Mani.

The Lancers put up much more resistance in the second and third doubles matches. PC’s number-two tandem of juniors Maddie Jones and Nell Magarity eventually overcame Central sophomores Neela Kitterman and Avery Morton by a score of 8-5.

In the third position, two other 11th graders for the Quakers, Zara Sinu and Addie Marg, faced senior Juliet Mann and junior Rebecca Li of the visiting side. This was the last match on the court, and Penn Charter emerged with a 7-0 overall victory as Sinu and Marg finally prevailed, 9-7.
