The Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) released its quarterly construction newsletter on Jan. 13, providing updates on several water infrastructure projects in Chestnut Hill, Mt. Airy and Germantown.
Some projects involve installing green stormwater infrastructure, or underground inlets and basins that soak up runoff. This effort is part of the city’s 25-year “Green City, Clean Waters” plan to help reduce stormwater overflow and meet federal environmental regulations.
The department is replacing water mains and sewers throughout Philadelphia to drastically improve the city’s drinking water infrastructure, most of which was first built more than 60 years ago, according to the PWD’s 2022 Water Revitalization Plan.
Residents in impacted areas may experience water interruptions and traffic detours during construction, according to PWD’s website. PWD will notify residents about the project start date and upcoming water service interruptions, excluding water main breaks or emergency repairs.
Wissahickon /Park Line in Mt. Airy
PWD is slated to replace water mains in West Mt. Airy starting this month, according to the project page. Here’s a list of the streets where new water mains and service lines will be installed.
•Wissahickon Avenue from West Hortter to West Johnson streets
•Park Line Drive from West Hortter to West Cliveden streets
•West Cliveden Street from Wissahickon to Wayne Avenues
•West Johnson Street from Wissahickon Avenue to Lincoln Drive
•West Johnson Street from Wayne Avenue to Sherman Street
•Wayne Avenue from Lincoln Drive to Washington Lane
•West Kingsley Street from West Walnut Lane to Wissahickon Avenue
North 21st/ North Lambert in Germantown
The city plans to install new water and sewer infrastructure. There is no start date for the project as of Jan. 20. Here are the affected streets.
•North Lambert Street from Church Lane to West Godfrey Avenue
•North Woodstock Street from West Laveer Street to Chelten Avenue
•North 21st Street from Church Lane to Chelten Avenue
•North 21st St from Stenton to West Godfrey Avenues
•North 11th Street from West Tabor Road to West Clarkson Avenue
Bells Mill/Germantown in Chestnut Hill
The city plans to build new water mains here. There is no estimated start date as of Jan. 20. PWD will post a list of affected streets when construction nears.
Forrest/Wadsworth in East Mount Airy
PWD is currently replacing water mains and implementing green infrastructure in Cedarbrook.
