State Rep. Chris Rabb won the Democratic primary for Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District on Tuesday, defeating three opponents.

“Tonight, in this moment, in this amazing city, in our beloved city of Philadelphia, the city that birthed this imperfect union has shown a bright light that is the many over the money,” Rabb, who currently represents Mt. Airy, parts of Chestnut Hill, and West Oak Lane, said Tuesday night.

“We know that the only way we can move towards a multiracial democracy is by showing up for each other, and not just playing around the edges. We demand systemic change, and I have been critiqued along this campaign for being too radical, being too bold.

“They ain’t seen nothing yet.”

As of Wednesday, May 20, with nearly all divisions reporting, Rabb secured 44.6% of the vote, with state Sen. Sharif Street and Dr. Ala Stanford trailing with 29.2% and 24%, respectively. A fourth candidate, Shaun Griffith, received 2.1%.

Rabb swept most of Northwest Philadelphia, including wins in the 9th, 22nd, 59th, and 12th wards representing Chestnut Hill, Mt. Airy, and Germantown.

A little over 66% of the 9th ward, representing Chestnut Hill and parts of Mt. Airy, voted for Rabb, as did over 64% of the 22nd ward, representing Mt. Airy. The 59th and 12th wards, which mostly represent Germantown, saw around 44% and 35% of the vote go to Rabb.

State House

Chris Johnson defeated Deshawnda Williams and Qasim Rashad in the Democratic primary in the 200th legislative district, the seat currently held by Rabb.

Johnson received about 61% of the vote in the district, which represents Mt. Airy, parts of Chestnut Hill, West Oak Lane, and Blue Bell Hill.

Prior to the election, Johnson had received endorsements from Rabb and Mayor Cherelle Parker.

There are no Republicans running in the general election for the 200th.

State Senate

State Sen. Art Haywood defeated challenger Michael Cogbill in the Democratic primary on Tuesday.

In the state’s 4th Senate district, which represents Northwest Philadelphia and parts of Montgomery County, Haywood received a little over 80% of the vote.

Haywood will face Republican challenger Todd Johnson in the general election on Nov. 3.
