Last week the girls of Springside Chestnut Hill Academy took on the team smack in the middle of the Inter-Ac basketball standings, then faced the squad ranked first in the league.
The SCH Blue Devils were unable to defy the oddsmakers in these contests, losing at home to number four Episcopal Academy on Tuesday, 64-42, and then travelling to the Academy of Notre Dame on a snowy Thursday and bowing to the league-leading Irish, 69-26.
The Devils ended the week with a record of 1-5 in the Inter-Ac, and 4-9 overall.
On Tuesday sophomore Kate Boerner, who would power Episcopal with 16 points, scored five early points on lay-up off a steal and a three-point bucket to lead the Churchwomen out to a 7-0 lead. Junior Flo Ajunwa hit a lay-up to get SCH on the board, starting in on her game-high 18-point performance.
Additional field goals by Ajunwa, junior Sammi Acuna and freshman Mimi Gallagher tightened the score to 10-8 with 90 seconds left in the first quarter, but then EA posted the last six points of the period.
As in the opening quarter, the visitors registered the first seven points of the second round, and by halftime they led 33-17.
Springside Chestnut Hill generated more offense in the second half, and was outscored by Episcopal by only three points in each of the last two quarters. Sophomore Kendall Schnee would net 11 of her 16 total points in the second half, depositing four three-point field goals for the game.
The individual scoring for the Blue Devils fell off sharply after Ajunwa and Schnee, however, with Gallagher next on the list with four points.
Following Boerner in the Episcopal scoring stats were senior Ali Dennis and junior Payton Hammond, with 13 points apiece, and sophomore Addie Thomas, with 10.
Thursday's opponent for SCH, Notre Dame, had beaten the Inter-Ac's third-place team, Agnes Irwin, by a score of 57-30 earlier in the week. Back on January 12, the Irish had suffered their first loss in or out of the league, falling to Universal Audenreid of the Philadelphia Public League, 74-68. That weekend, Notre Dame was missing its best defender, senior Sophie Hall, who was participating in a soccer tournament. She has signed as a goalie with the University of Delaware.
Back in the line-up during the week, Hall had a game-high 13 points against SCH. The Blue Devils' top scorer, Schnee, produced 12 points as did AND sophomore guard Riley Davis.
The host Irish went up 6-0 at the outset before Schnee bagged the first of her four three-pointers (she made one in each quarter).
After ending the first period with a 23-6 advantage, the Irish kept their starters on the bench for the beginning of the second round. They have an excellent sixth-man in junior Emma Anthony, though, and she lobbed in two three-pointers to make it 29-6. The starting players filtered back into the contest later on, and the tally was 45-9 at the half.
After the intermission, the Irish gave all of their reserve players some time on the court, and their lead increased more slowly than it had before the break.
Springside's Ajunwa would score all of her six points after halftime, while Gallagher finished with four points, sophomore Kalyn Freund scored three points and junior Pia Swamy had one.
Like their teammate, Hall, Notre Dame's Anthony and center Grace Nasr did all of their scoring in the first half, contributing eight and six points, respectively.
