In tennis, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy had defeated teams from several high school leagues in the Philadelphia area, but had trouble notching a win in its own conference, the Inter-Ac League.
That changed on May 5, when the Blue Devils crafted a convincing 6-1 victory over visiting Malvern Prep. The outcome improved SCH’s season record to 1-4 in league play, while the squad leveled off at 7-7 overall.
For the match with Malvern’s Friars (0-5, 5-7), the stage seemed to be set for a number-one singles bout between two eighth graders. This, however, was not to be. Will Adamson, a member of Springside Chestnut Hill’s Class of 2030, has played first singles for the Blue Devils all season, but because of a minor elbow injury, he was positioned at first doubles along with sophomore Matty Talbot.
The newly formed tandem took down Malvern sophomore Arman Patel and freshman Lucian Fischer, 6-2, 6-3. At second doubles the Friars picked up their lone victory of the afternoon, as visitors Will Bargen and Stowe Thatcher (both juniors) emerged with a 6-3, 6-2 win over the twosome from the host team, freshmen Wyatt Friedland and Bernie Caplan.
Matty Talbot’s older brother Jimmy (a senior) played with sophomore Alec Stewart at third doubles. They prevailed, 6-4, 6-2, over two Malvern seniors, Will Shuford and Alex Fischer.
The first match to be completed was the fourth doubles contest, where SCH junior Max Tonkon and sophomore Ed Berman took two 6-1 sets from their guests, sophomore Luke LeSage and junior Max Sizelove.
Gathering momentum as his second singles match progressed, Blue Devils sophomore Wheeler Moore topped visiting freshman Charlie Blok, 6-4, 6-0. Another SCH sophomore, Krishan Gandhi, held down the third singles spot, recording a 6-3, 6-2 win against a Friars junior, Sean Halladay.
The Malvern eighth-grader at first singles, Charlie Hourihan, faced Springside Chestnut Hill junior Cade Stone, who has played both singles and doubles for the Devils over the course of the season. In a long match featuring many extended rallies, Stone came out on top thanks to a tiebreaker played instead of a full third set. The scores were 6-3, 0-6, 10-7.
