Getting a good turn-out for their own volleyball program, the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy Blue Devils hosted a little get-together at the end of the first week of 2018 preseason practice, welcoming the varsity and junior varsity squads from fellow Inter-Ac League members Germantown Academy and Agnes Irwin School to the Vare Field House last Friday.

The five seniors who graduated from the 2017 SCH varsity team are being succeed by five members of the class of 2019 in Adriana Isackman, Jill McGrath, Hadley Sager, Jenna Stapleton and player/manager Krystian Sampson.

The four returning juniors are Rebecca Arnold, Hannah Cohen, Julia Hannigan and Katie Reagan. Making the 11th grade class the most populous on the team are new varsity players Jane Herron, Corinne Motl, Lauren Salewski, Sabrina Wang and Kylie Woloshyn.

Salewski is a 5’10” hitter whose family has relocated to this area from Virginia, where the high school team she played for, Flint Hill, won the state championship last fall.

Back as sophomores this season for Springside Chestnut Hill are the team’s tallest player, 6’2” Maya Gerlach, and Kylie McTamney, the younger sister of one of the 2017 team captains, Kayla McTamney. There are also two freshmen who’ll appear on the varsity roster, Galen Kilfeather and Sam Klug.

Veteran high school and club coach David Noll is entering his second season heading up the Blue Devils’ program, and once again Jess Stokes, an SCH administrator, will serve as varsity assistant and head coach for the JV.

In the 2017 campaign, the Blue Devils notched victories against non-league opponents, including members of the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association that belong to the Friends Schools League.

One of their goals this season is to make some headway against fellow members of the Inter-Ac League, against whom they experienced some problems last year.
