The playoff picture came into focus for the Philadelphia Suburban Women's Basketball League last week, as make-up games from earlier postponements were played on Tuesday evening and the final contests of the 2025 regular season took place on Thursday.
Jefferson University's Team Black ended up with an unblemished 8-0 record, winning games against Team Cyber Pink (64-56) and Team Royal Blue (78-48). Team Sky Blue (Holy Family University) was seeded second with a mark of 6-2 after accepting a forfeit from Team Purple (mostly West Chester University women) on Tuesday and topping Team Kelly Green on Thursday, 58-42.
Defending league champion Cyber Pink was seeded third (5-3), as Tuesday's loss to Black was balanced by a win by forfeit over Team Lemon Gold. Purple occupied fourth place with a 4-4 ledger, and Kelly Green was fifth, at 3-5. Lemon Gold and Team Maroon (mostly Arcadia University) both had 2-6 records, with Gold getting the higher playoff seed by virtue of a head-to-head win over Maroon on July 8.
Team Royal Blue (eighth at 1-7) faces Team Black in Tuesday's quarterfinal playoff round, while Sky plays Lemon Gold, Cyber Pink squares off against Maroon, and Purple encounters Kelly Green.
Tuesday's contest against Cyber Pink was expected to provide the last major obstacle for Team Black in its quest for an undefeated regular-season record. The Jefferson group went ahead early and held a 10-point lead at halftime, 39-29.
In the third quarter, Pink gradually shaved points of Black's lead, and with 2:20 left in the period, a three-pointer by Rylee Derr moved Pink within three points of the leaders at 48-45. However, the last stage of round three saw Cyber Pink miss a series of lay-ups on drives, and although Black's own shooting was less than exemplary, the summer Rams had a little more breathing room at the start of the final quarter, up 52-45.
At the start of the fourth, Germantown Academy grad Gabby Bowes drew a foul and hit both free throws to make it a five-point game, but Pink would get no closer than that. Scoring from redshirt freshman Caleigh Sperling and junior Emily Spratt widened the gap for Team Black once more, and the lead was up to 11 points before a late three-pointer by Derr set the final margin at eight.
Sperling rang up 20 points for the winners and Spratt had 14, while Cyber Pink was led by Taylor Hamm, with 16 points, and Derr, with 15.
The other game on Tuesday was a competitive bout in which Kelly Green eventually prevailed against Royal Blue, 66-61. The Blue bunch was up by one point at the end of the first quarter and at halftime (24-23), receiving six points apiece from Julia R. Masterman grad Jocelyn Goldstein and from Angela Zazone of Goldey Beacom College (a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference along with Jefferson, Holy Family University, and Chestnut Hill College).
In a 27-21 third-quarter rally, Kelly Green received 10 points from guard Annie Aspesi (Harriton H.S./Tufts U.), with former Chestnut Hill College players Avery White and Emily Chmiel adding nine and eight points, respectively. Kelly was up 50-45 entering the fourth quarter, and was still ahead by five after a 16-16 standoff in the final frame.
White had a game-high 17 points while Aspesi finished with 16 and Chmiel with 14. Goldstein and Zagone each recorded 15 points for Royal Blue.
Only three of the four games scheduled for Thursday evening were played, as Lemon Gold called in a forfeit to Cyber Pink. The three contests each pitted a team from the top half of the league standings against a squad from the bottom half, with the expected results.
Sky Blue gained a 10-point advantage over Kelly Green in the opening quarter, then led 36-21 at the intermission as incoming Holy Family freshman Ella Brown made two three-pointers and hit four other shots closer to the basket. After netting those 14 points in the first half she went on to finish with a game-high 19. The former CHC players on Kelly Green, White and Chmiel, came away with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Sperling Led Jefferson's Team Black in scoring once more in a 78-48 win over Royal Blue, and in Purple's 72-45 victory over Maroon, the high scorer for Purple was actually not a West Chester player, but recent Audenreid High School graduate Reynah Rattliff, who'll join Wilmington University, a member of the CACC.
