After notching a solid 5-2 tennis victory over Penn Charter on Monday, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy's Blue Devils turned their attention to a rematch with Germantown Academy last Tuesday afternoon.
Strength in the doubles flights has been an important asset for SCH this spring, but on Tuesday the Devils and visiting GA Patriots split the four doubles matches evenly. Germantown came out on top in all three singles bouts to take home a 5-2 victory and complete a season sweep of Springside Chestnut Hill.
The Blue Devils emerged with an overall record of 3-5 and a 2-4 mark within the Inter-Ac League. GA improved to 7-2, 4-1. The Patriots lost to league leader Haverford School 2-5, but due to a rain-out they have not yet faced Episcopal Academy. As noted, SCH topped Penn Charter in their first meeting, and GA defeated the Quakers 4-3, on April 17.
The Blue Devils were happy to be playing on their home courts for their rematch against GA after a close road loss in the teams' first meeting. In that match on April 1, the Patriots prevailed 4-3, by winning a third-set tiebreaker in the first doubles flight.
The Blue Devils came into their second GA contest after Monday's Penn Charter victory, in which the Quakers received their two individual wins from number one Nate Arnold and number two Simon Zoldan.
When SCH hosted Germantown Academy the following day, none of the matches ended quickly, a sign of relative parity between the players. GA's 6-0, 6-2 victory at first singles would appear to indicate an early ending, but this was one of the last contests to finish. Although the Patriots' Aiden Swartz won almost every game, most of them were fiercely contested by fellow senior Andrew Blum of the Blue Devils.
Swartz will continue his tennis career at the University of Rochester.
In another bout between seniors, Germantown's Alex Katzer overcame host Drew Sharon 6-4, 6-2 in the second singles flight, and in the number three spot Patriots' junior Vince Zhou won 6-3, 6-4 over Blum's brother Jason, an SCH sophomore.
Two other brothers contributed to Springside Chestnut Hill's two victories during the afternoon. Freshman Matty Talbot joined up with sophomore Cade Stone at third doubles, where they bested GA sophomore Jacob Malenbaum and junior Alex Wray by winning a third-set super-tiebreaker 6-1, 3-6, 10-4.
Junior Jimmy Talbot played with senior Dylan Kaplan in the fourth doubles flight, winning a pair of 6-2 sets from a pair of Patriot sophomores, Ravi Bhatt and Gabe Freeman.
On hand to watch the Talbot boys was their grandfather, Jim Talbot, a former Chestnut Hill Academy athletic director and record-setting soccer coach.
At first doubles, a 6-3, 6-3 outcome favored GA senior Ben Getson and sophomore Justin Huang over Blue Devils senior Josh Miller and his young partner, seventh-grader Will Adamson.
Junior Connor Bradley and freshman Jake Barenbaum of Germantown Academy won a super-tiebreaker to take the second doubles match, recording scores of 6-4, 1-6, 10-5 against senior Ethan Eckert and sophomore Asher Hawkins of the Blue Devils.
