Springfield students exposed to racist attack during Zoom meeting celebrating Black History

Posted

A Black History Month Zoom meeting for school children, meant to celebrate Black inventors, was hacked by an unknown person who subjected students and their families to a racist and sexual attack.  Nearly 30 families were in the meeting, a STEM Night activity organized for K-5 students by the Multicultural Parents Association (MPA), a school-affiliated group. The MPA and Springfield School District administration staff who were facilitating the meeting stepped in quickly to shut down the intruder.

Springfield Township police are investigating it as a cyber crime. A similar incident happened in the township in the Fall, targeting another minority affiliated group.

In response, the MPA is partnering with the Enfield/Erdenheim Home & School Partnership and the NAACP Youth Leadership Committee in a fundraiser to purchase more books on “social justice, equity, and inclusion” from a list curated by Uncle Bobbie’s Coffee and Books in Germantown. The books will be distributed to Enfield and Erdenheim libraries and classrooms.

In a joint statement from Parents of Springfield Township, the fundraisers stated “It is our hope that not only can our community use our hurt and anger to impact positive change, but we also can use this to teach our children to look for helpers and to be the helpers.”

Donations to support the Social Justice, Equity & Inclusion Book Drive can be made online.
