Finally. After nearly 20 years of pancakes and bacon, crowds waiting for tables, closure, vandalism and attempts at relocation, the Trolley Car Diner departed its Mt. Airy home for Wayne Junction. The successful move that started Oct. 12 had been preceded by three earlier attempts to move the diner, which had become a source of frustration for developers transforming the restaurant’s former location on Germantown Avenue into an apartment complex that includes commercial space. Earlier trips were thwarted by permit problems and low-hanging wires. Even the ultimately successful trip encountered a hiccup when it arrived at the train trestle on East Chelten Avenue. Too tall to fit under the trestle, the diner stalled until the mover trimmed the diner sign brackets so that the move could proceed. The 3.3-mile trip took 25 hours. Plans are for the diner to be restored and return to its use as a family-friendly eating place… somewhere.
