Summer is time for block parties, and the city has announced a new initiative to help residents pay for them.

“Block Party Bonanza” is designed to ensure that all Philadelphians have a chance to be a part of the semiquincentennial celebrations. As part of the program, Philadelphia250 will “2026-ify” 250 block parties across the city with special “Life, Liberty, and Happiness” kits (echoing the famous line from the Declaration of Independence) with decorations, games and activities for all ages, including sidewalk chalk, custom items from Philadelphia sports teams, hula hoops, jump ropes, crafts, sticker sheets, banners, misting fans, planters and seeds.

In addition to the kits, each block will receive a $250 grocery gift card, donated by ShopRite, to purchase food and refreshments.

In order to be considered for the program, residents first must apply for a block party permit. After they receive an approval email from the Streets Department, a subsequent email will include a link and form to register for the Block Party Bonanza program. Participating block parties will then be selected and notified individually.

Philadelphia250 will select participants that ensure equitable participation across the city’s 10 City Council districts. The block parties must take place between May 23 and Oct. 3.
