At Springside Chestnut Hill on April 2, Penn Charter went up 6-0 in the first quarter and continued on to win, 14-1.
Longtime PC head coach Colleen Magarity is back to lead the Quakers this spring, while the Blue Devils are working under their third head coach in as many seasons. The new mentor is Elizabeth Trojan, a New York State native who became a 100-goal scorer at Villanova University. Just prior to arriving at SCH, she was an assistant coach at Temple University for four seasons. One of her assistants is 2013 SCH graduate Kitty Morrissey, who went on to play for Duke University.
One of the Blue Devils’ current seniors, Brae Powell, will play college lacrosse for Temple. Her classmates Madigan Wallach and Kass Magarity are headed to Boston University and Virginia Commonwealth University, respectively.
Penn Charter senior Harbor Campbell, who scored a game-high five goals at SCH on April 2, will continue her lacrosse career at Loyola University. The University of Michigan will welcome the Quakers’ Molly Dougherty, and Ailyah Leonard will play for Towson University. Three other seniors are headed to New England: goalie Maeve Magarity (Boston College), Ana Buckley (Dartmouth College) and Alice Summers (Amherst) .
PC junior Mia DiBenedetto has made a verbal commitment to Penn State.
The match at SCH began with offensive forays by each team that ended in unsuccessful shots. With just under four minutes elapsed, Campbell got the visitors’ side of the scoreboard rolling, and she scored again 80 seconds later. After junior Lila Marciniak made it 3-0, junior Claire Cho dodged multiple defenders to score Charter’s fourth goal with 4:13 remaining in the first quarter. Fellow 11th-grader Cate Wall scored just seven seconds later after PC seized the ball off the draw.
A little later, on another Penn Charter offensive possession, Campbell was awarded a free position on the center hashmark. She flipped a pass to Wall, who was coming from behind the cage on the left. Wall put in her second goal with just four seconds on the clock, closing out the opening period with a 6-0 lead for the visitors. The Blue Devils were able to keep that margin from growing for more than seven minutes in the second round, but the Quakers then added three goals for a 9-0 halftime advantage.
Charter’s total reached double digits early in the third quarter; then SCH broke up the shutout when Powell scooped up a ground ball to the left of the goal and cut toward the middle to score with 8:18 on the clock. A little over three minutes later, the visitors’ Campbell netted her first goal of the second half for an 11-1 tally, and the game stayed in running-clock mode the rest of the way.
In addition to Campbell, the multiple-goalscorers for the Quakers were Cho and Wall, each with two goals. Sophomore Makenna Myers came away with a total of 10 draw controls, and in goal Magarity made two saves for the victory.
