Please take a bow. Don’t be bashful, you deserve it.
Four years ago, in the wake of the Trump victory, 87 Cathedral Villagers came together in two organizing meetings held on consecutive days and formed a local chapter of Indivisible here at Cathedral Village (we now number about 130). Although Indivisible nationally had no road map as to what would need to be done to oppose those parts of the Trump agenda with which we disagreed, it was obvious from the just concluded campaign that there would be an extensive “shopping list” of policies calling for opposition.
None of us in those early meetings had any idea where our path would take us. We all had questions: Can we make a difference? What actions might we take? Will anyone anywhere care what we do?
Intuitively we knew what participants in other social movements in our country’s history had experienced. The only way to get on the step ladder to fairness and justice is to take the first step.
We, together, took that step.
It turns out that four years later we have been one of 6,000 Indivisible groups organized around the country, we are alive and well in every legislative district in the country and have, as a national organization, participated in more than 500,000 actions. Locally, here at the Village, we have made several thousand phones calls, authored hundreds of letters and postcards, created several educational events and conducted public witness occasions at the corner of Ridge and Cathedral Road.
Take a deep breath of relief. Be thankful there will be a new occupant in the White House. Be grateful that glass has fallen from that ceiling and she is African America and of Indian descent. Yes, after a period of rest and discernment, know that the ladder of fairness and justice awaits our next step.
For the Indivisible Steering Committee, whose members are: Michael Blum, Dennis Brunn, Dhyan Cassie, Eloise Chevrier, Neville Kallenbach and Sarah West, I am, sincerely:
Rev. Richard Fernandez
