Detweiler project may be dangerous

Posted

While I’m in complete agreement thus far on comments expressed regarding the Detweiler project, there's another issue on the matter which warrants attention.

The point of ingress and egress for the parking garage is perilously close to one of the more dangerous intersections in Chestnut Hill. Yes, too close for comfort.

This could present a unique safety challenge. The curvature of Germantown Avenue is a factor at that intersection, raising the matter of sight distance. Furthermore, East and West Southampton avenues align asymmetrically with Germantown Avenue, suggesting an extra measure of caution to minimize risk.

And then the protection of students attending the public school at that intersection is an important consideration. Twelve years ago, a traffic engineer said  improvements were a priority at Germantown and Southampton avenues. Safer conditions will now be more urgent in light of this project.
