Summer 2024 issue: From the editor

In this special gardening issue, we celebrate Philadelphia's rich horticultural heritage and explore the joys of gardening. We take you through the lush landscapes of Northwest Philadelphia, both public and private, and appreciate how the city's Quaker roots have nurtured a thriving "culture of horticulture," earning Philadelphia the well-deserved title of "Gardening Capital of the World."

The Garden Club of America, the nation's oldest garden club, was founded right here in Northwest Philadelphia. We learn about the trailblazing women who established this enduring legacy of civic engagement and environmental stewardship, and meet some who carry on that tradition today.

We showcase the stunning creations of local botanical artists who transform common plant materials into breathtaking works of art and trace the history of this ancient craft's resurgence in Philadelphia, thanks to the vision and dedication of a group of local women.

Finally, for those just discovering the joy of digging their hands into rich, life-giving soil, we offer a seasonally-inspired guide, brought to you by local experts. From the burst of spring blooms to the frosty beauty of winter, we highlight the essential tasks and pleasures of tending to a garden throughout the year.

As you flip through these pages, we hope you find inspiration to cultivate your own patch of green, whether it's a sprawling backyard oasis or a charming container garden – and enjoy the countless rewards that await those who nurture the beauty of nature.

Happy gardening!
