I loved the article Len Lear wrote about Philo T. Farnsworth in last week's Local (“Recalling Chestnut Hill's genius inventor of the TV set,” July 11). I thought it might be of interest to let readers know that I personally live on the second floor of the carriage house at 127 E. Mermaid Lane.

That’s exactly where Farnsworth had his lab, of course. It actually does cross my mind more often than one might think, to be amused by the fact that the place where I sleep and eat and live is exactly the place where the TV was invented. Kind of a trip.

A bit more: I bought 127 E. Mermaid Lane (where the Farnsworth Lab was, on the second floor of the three-story carriage house in the rear) in December of 2000, and I was able to also buy 133 (contiguous in the back) in 2001. 

I love living in Chestnut Hill for so many reasons. Among them, the abundance of trees and carefully tended green spaces and gardens, the sense of cohesive community, so helped by the Local's weekly issues and all the organizational ways people take part and the way we are becoming increasingly diverse over time. I also love where we live because East Mermaid Lane is part of the neighborhood where the people who built Chestnut Hill's great houses built their own homes. So many names spring up in this neighborhood – Marcolina, Lorenzon, Tramontina, Puntel, Fiorella, Roman and more.

By the way, there is a historical marker dedicated to Philo Farnsworth at 1270 E. Mermaid Lane in Wyndmoor, across from Laurel Beech Park.
