Holiday decorating is an activity many look forward to each year. It’s a time set aside for buying a tree, selecting decorative ornaments, and entertaining friends surrounded by holiday décor. Choices abound on how one decorates for the season, whether it is a traditional feel that signifies the holidays or a themed approach likely to change every season depending on trends or simply a change of mood. No matter how we decide to create our holiday surroundings, choosing a direction can be half the fun.

Many of us choosing the traditional approach likely have kept treasured ornaments that have been passed down from beloved family members. A memorable collection of decorative pieces found during recent holiday excursions also can create a tree of memories. Mixed with traditional elements like pine cones, evergreens, and the traditional colors of deep reds and greens, these personal collections are the pieces that keep past holiday seasons alive, and always remind us of family traditions, and loved ones who may not be with us anymore.

There is just something about the color combination of red and brown, with the deep green of the tree, that is one of the warmest holiday color schemes. Packages can be wrapped in simple brown paper, tied with buffalo plaid ribbon, to create a warm, cabin-like feel. It is no wonder that a traditional holiday direction is one of the most popular holiday designs.

There also are families that revel in creating a different holiday theme each year. And if you are a part of one, choices abound! Color themes are one popular direction, and usually mean a combination or a monochromatic scheme that does not involve the traditional red and green. You may have noticed the proliferation of Instagram influencers, who offer numerous holiday “themed” décor. Although I consider myself a traditionalist, I have found many of their ideas quite inspiring.

The color pink has been seen as of late, and used to great success, especially within spaces with lighter surroundings. Incorporating either an aluminum or all silver tree, branches can be covered with glossy rose-colored ornaments and embellished with dried hydrangea heads, that can be spray-painted in the pink tone of choice. Lightly colored feathers can be discriminately tucked within the branches, giving the tree a distinctly avian feel.

One of the most popular color schemes this season is the “all-white” scheme. An all-white Christmas has been around for a while, but this year, there are some intriguing new directions that incorporate the theme with new and beautiful aspects, especially if your home would be considered modern or “transitional.” Instead of the traditional Blue Spruce or Jack Pine, consider the much more open and highly fragrant California Silver Tip. It might be a challenge finding this species here in the Northeast, but the avant guard appearance of these trees lends itself perfectly to the current design direction of more minimalist interiors.

Donned in all white lights, the open branches are perfectly situated to carry long strands of nostalgic yet current silver tinsel. The restraint of this tree makes a strong yet silent statement within a traditional interior designed with contemporary furnishings. And if you are one who believes “more is more,” the addition of all white bows, combined with garlands of pearls, takes the simplicity of the tree to the next level. Tuck in some white rosebuds, and your tree will create a white Christmas fantasy!

So whether you are a staunch traditionalist or an avid trendsetter, there are many directions to take. Choose a theme, and discover the elements that create that theme, and when the holidays arrive, you can enjoy the fruits of your explorations!
