Northwest landmarks earn citywide preservation awards

Posted

Projects and organizations based in Northwest Philadelphia and the nearby suburbs were honored by the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia last week during the organization's annual achievement awards ceremony at Vie ballroom in Center City.

The Engine 37 Firehouse in Chestnut Hill and the Germantown Fireproof Storage Building projects won preservation awards; the Lynnewood Hall Preservation Foundation was recognized for community service and Historic Germantown, Inc., was honored with the Alliance’s Board of Directors Award.

“We are fortunate to live in a metropolis that consistently turns out great preservation outcomes year after year,” Paul Steinke, executive director of the Alliance, said in a statement. “Thank you to all who make this legacy of preservation happen, day in and day out.”

Engine 37, on Highland Avenue, the city’s oldest active fire station, was recognized for the renovation of its main building, built in 1894.

Updates to the 96-year-old Germantown Fireproof Storage Building, which houses 800 storage units, included fixing its landmark clock tower.

The Lynnewood Hall Preservation Foundation, led by executive director Edward Thome and COO Angie VanScyoc, was recognized for its rescue of the Cheltenham estate designed by Horace Trumbauer known as “the last American Versaille.”

Historic Germantown, a collective of 19 cultural organizations and historic sites, was honored for its efforts to “build pride of place, community wellness and economic growth.”

Four Mills Barn, damaged by flooding in Ambler, and The Frances M. Maguire Museum in Bala Cynwyd, formerly the Barnes Foundation museum and named for the late matriarch of the philanthropic Maguire family, of Wyndmoor, also won awards.
