The seventh annual She Shines Women’s Empowerment Conference, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7, at New Covenant Church of Philadelphia, 7500 Germantown Ave. in West Mt. Airy, will focus on health, healing, wellness, spirituality, education, safety, civic engagement, networking opportunities, and offer a resource fair and panel discussions facilitated by national and local speakers.

The theme of the conference, organized by the nonprofit She Shines Sisterhood, Inc., is “She Still Matters!” which is just about how Germantown activist Robin Shine Maddox, a 63-year-old breast cancer survivor, approaches life, with inclusion of underserved communities.

“If you are looking to be heard and seen personally and professionally, then the She Shines Conference is the safe and welcoming place for you,” said Maddox, daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Robert P. Shine, founder and longtime pastor of Berachah Baptist Church in West Oak Lane.

As a licensed Baptist minister herself, Maddox founded She Shines Sisterhood in 2011. Her network participates in the She Shines Conference, a community women’s empowerment summit.

“The term ‘successful’ is not necessarily defined by what we achieve but by what we overcome in life,” said Maddox, who works as a community liaison for state Sen. Vincent Hughes. “Our day of empowerment is about both of these, really. There are many tenacious women of color who seize life and its challenges with brilliance, beauty and bravery, both personally and professionally.”

A 1985 graduate of Lincoln University, Maddox earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology. She is active in the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition and helps connect those undergoing diagnosis and treatment with available resources.

As the founder and executive leader of She Shines Sisterhood, Maddox’s community involvement includes an array of planning committees and boards. She has spent more than 25 years working in the nonprofit, private and public sectors.

The She Shines Conference will provide free mammogram screenings.

“If you are looking to be heard and seen personally and professionally, then the She Shines Conference is the safe and welcoming place for you,” Maddox said.
