Spring youth baseball season returns to the Hill

Posted

The Spring Baseball season returns in April. The Chestnut Hill Youth Sports Club offers baseball programs for boys and girls from ages 4-19. Opening Day is tentatively scheduled for April 17. The registration deadline is Sunday, March 28.

This season, the CHYSC has added Major and Rookie teams from the Germantown Warriors, a new organization created by Haneef Hill. “That’s a big deal,” said CHYSC Baseball Commissioner Brien Tilley. “I’m looking forward to that growing.” The Minor and Major league teams will play at the Water Tower each day of the week. In addition, plans have been made to add travel games against Conshohocken Baseball at Sutcliffe Park.

Divisions are based on a child’s age as of May 1, 2021:

  • Quick Ball - Ages 4-6
  • Rookie League - Ages 7-8
  • Minor League - Ages 8-10
  • Major League - Ages 10-12
  • Senior Leagues - Ages 13-18

Tilley is proud that the teams represent students from schools throughout the area. “There are so many schools in our community,” he observed. “It’s kind of fun how baseball brings them together. Routinely we’ll have a dozen to fourteen different schools represented.”

“I think one of the neatest things about our program is the depth of it: We go from age 4 to age 19.”

“The most specific thing is the anticipation,” he added. “Everybody’s just excited to get out and play. We’re expecting a real high energy, fun atmosphere.”

For many, there has been no baseball in over a year. Last year was the first time the CHYSC had to cancel a season. Registration fee refunds were offered; Tilley said that many families donated the fees back to the club to support future programming. “They all know how special it is to be back out there.”

The CHYSC started in 1962 as the Chestnut Hill Fathers’ Club, then was renamed in 2001. 2021 will be Tilley’s 13th year coaching baseball at CHYSC, and his seventh as commissioner but his three children, Sebastian, 16, Branden, 13, and Meredith, 10, have grown up playing sports with the club. Tilley usually also intramural basketball at Norwood-Fontbonne Academy, though that has been on hold during the pandemic.

Registration deadline is Sunday, March 28. Anyone interested in signing up their children for the upcoming baseball season can register online at chysc.org
