As the chill of late fall engulfs the Northwest, the warmth inside the neighborhood’s kitchens tells a different story. Here, where church basements hum with activity and community centers transform into dining rooms, the spirit of Thanksgiving isn't measured in turkey pounds or pie slices – but in open doors and extended hands.

Throughout our community, there are organizations and people who are hosting Thanksgiving dinners or gathering donations to supply families with ingredients to make their own feast - at no cost. Here is a list of resources throughout the Northwest if you’d like to donate, sit down and share a meal, or rattle those pots and pans yourself. 

The Chestnut Hill Rotary is partnering with the Papermill Food Hub and seeking donations to help families in need who live in the Kensington section of Philadelphia. Donations will be received and sorted on Wednesday, Nov. 27 from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Visit chestnuthillrotary.org for a list of foods that are needed. Collection is at Center on the Hill, Widener Hall, 8855 Germantown Avenue (next to Chestnut Hill Hospital). Free parking is available behind the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill. 

Das Good Cafe Philly in Germantown will distribute a free Thanksgiving meal for 300 as a way to “give thanks to our amazing community.” Neighbors can pick up a hot turkey dinner starting at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 27. Meals will be distributed until 3 p.m., or until all the food is gone. Pick up location is Tipsy Cafe & Catering, 5227 Germantown Ave.

Dare to Imagine Church in Mt. Airy will distribute 125 turkeys to residents who register on the church’s website at d2i.churchcenter.com. Turkeys will be distributed (one turkey per family ) from noon to 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 23, at Grocery Outlet, 25 W. Hortter St.

Philly I AM Inc. and the Everything Philly Podcast will host a Friendsgiving Community Dinner from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 27. Dinner is 6 p.m. Dorothy Emanuel Recreation Center, 8500 Provident Road. RSVP by calling Sherrice at 215-688-2430.

Pleasant Playground in Mt. Airy will host the recreation center’s 7th Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner at 6 p.m., Monday Nov. 25. The Thanksgiving meal is once again catered by Sheree’s Home Cooking & Catering. Meals will also be available to go. Pleasant Playground is at 6757 Chew Avenue.

Face to Face Germantown, the nonprofit that provides meals, and social, legal and health services to area residents will host its biggest fundraiser, the organization’s annual Turkey Trot, a five-mile race, and one mile fun run. Expect more than 1,000 runners at 9 a.m. along Forbidden Creek along the Wissahickon. A virtual run is also available. Participants can register on the Face to Face website. Day-of registration will also be available. Visit facetofacegermantown.org/events for information. 

New Covenant Church of Philadelphia provides food regularly through the Two Fish Five Loaves ministry. Free groceries will be distributed starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23. The church is at 7500 Germantown Ave., Mt. Airy.

Germantown Community Fridges, at 20 W. Armat St. and 19 E. High St., are stocked for the community, by the community. They invite residents to take what you need and leave what you can. For info, germantowncommunityfridge.com.
