Chestnut Hill is gearing up for a howling good time as it prepares to host its fourth annual Pet Parade – a popular event that brings a colorful procession of costumed canines, a few brave felines and sometimes even a goat – out to celebrate the holiday season on Germantown Avenue.

This year’s event, set for Sunday, Oct. 27, marks an exciting addition to the lineup with the introduction of a costume contest. Participants will compete in categories including Scariest, Cutest, Look-alike with their owner, and Most Creative, with prizes awaiting the winners.

This will also be the first year that Presto, the beloved dog of CHCA board president Laura Lucas, will not be in the lineup. Presto – a regular participant who had his own Facebook following – reached the end of his canine years in September. Lucas, however, will still be participating. She’s stepping up to be one of the judges. The parade, organized annually by the Chestnut Hill Community Association (CHCA), has become a neighborhood favorite. "We're such a pet-friendly neighborhood – so many people here really love their dogs," CHCA Executive Director Anne McNiff explained, reflecting on the event's growing popularity.

The charm of this event lies not just in the clever costumes – past years have seen everything from pirates to elaborate Jurassic Park themes – but in the sense of community it fosters. Whether you're there to compete, cheer on the parade of pooches, or simply soak in the atmosphere, there’s something in it for everyone.

The parade kicks off at 12:30 p.m. from 150 E. Evergreen Avenue, winding its way down Germantown Avenue to conclude at Buckley Park. No registration is required.
