Car break-ins

Posted

In a recent letter to the editor regarding the spate of car break-ins near Forbidden Drive, the writer got it almost right when he recommended keeping "your valuables out of plain view" in parked cars.

Unfortunately, as the theft report in the same January 18 edition indicates, break-ins are now occurring in which nothing is taken; in other words, the bad guys break in whether or not they can see valuables.

Better advice is to not leave anything of value in your car, period. With reports of multiple (and usually successful) break-ins and thefts each week in the Local, I've often thought the best service Chestnut Hill and/or Fairmount Park could provide would be prominent signs in the parking areas telling users they should expect their cars will be broken into, and to thus not leave any valuables in them.
